| Thompsons Prestigeous Trophy for the Dairy Sector at Balmoral |
![]() The BOCM Rose Bowl, which is one of the most coveted trophies at Balmoral, was forgotten about for many years before being presented to the May Show at Balmoral. The rose bowl was purchased by the animal feed compounder, BOCM at an antique auction in London in 1955 and was presented to the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society for the old Dairy Show. When that event ceased the cup stayed in the vaults of the jewellers who inscribed it until it was discovered in 1978 and was presented to the May show by BOCM. John Thompson and Sons continued the tradition when they acquired the BOCM business and have been awarding this valuable trophy every year since. It is presented to the best exhibitor bred dairy animal Gordon Donaldson, Sales Director said “We have been impressed by the standard of dairy cattle at Balmoral each year and feel that the exhibitor who has bred a champion animal deserves a special accolade. We hope that the change to a one day show for the dairy section will encourage a lot more entries and provide stiff competition for all of our trophies. These include the Supreme Champion, the Champion Pair and the Champion Group of Three in addition to the Exhibitor Bred Champion.” Gordon continued “It is company policy to invest in the future of Northern Ireland agriculture. This is achieved by supporting vital research projects, forming beneficial partnership and investing in efficiency measures which provide the farmer with quality guarantees at best cost.” ![]() Thompson's sponsor the dairy, and poultry classes and also encourage the farmers of the future by supporting the YFCU tug of war competition.. Gordon Donaldson added “ The exhibitors at Balmoral display everything that is good and positive about Northern Ireland agriculture and help to reinforce the message of quality local food from our province.” |
